How I came up with “I am the Devil!”

“I am the Devil” is a criminal thriller. It is quite long and since I had it published on Wattpad already, I thought it would be better if I provided the link to it.

Inspirations
1. Edgar Allan Poe

I had read Nepali translation of “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe a long time before I read his classic thriller “The Tell-Tale Heart” at high school. I liked it so much that I browsed for his works on the Internet and read some of the e-books. Sometime later, I luckily found a collection of his stories in a public library at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had always been my favorite but Poe had now grabbed a seat above him.

2. A news story

That day I had woken up at 4 o’clock in the morning and I had been surfing the internet for some news. A news story on the Nagarik daily had said that an eighteen year old had been caught for murdering upon his relative. He had said to the police, “She used to taunt me. She used to say do this, do that. Now that I killed her, I will be happy.”

His statement chilled my heart to bits. How could anyone do anything like that and say something that way? That also reminded me of the opening paragraph of “The Tell-Tale Heart”. I decided then and there that I would write a story on that topic.

3. The Actual Writing

It was not difficult to begin. I had two characters already and I had the beginning and the end. I wrote the first version in four pages of my exercise book. I used that manuscript to write another one, which was a bit longer and had additional characters with additional plots. That I typed into my computer and then published it online on Wattpad.

4. The Current Version

While reading the story online, sometime later, I discovered that there were several errors. I used to omit one, and later find another. I, then decided to print it out and then I went through it word by word. Finally, I could omit all the errors and during the process I also added details to some plots that seemed too vague even to me.

That’s how I came up with his story. If you like the journey of the making of the story, please visit the link.
